Departures is a video walk especially made to guide you through the terminal building of Leipzig/Halle airport. 4 specially adapted luggage trolleys are available and once equipped with headphones, the participant is taken on an audio-visual tour of the building they are in with excursions to other places without ever leaving the confines of the airport.
In front of you is a pile of suitcases with a screen in the uppermost one. The video that plays on it simultaneously acts as a guide, by showing you where in the terminal building to walk, as well as acting as a window on other worlds, taking you round the surrounding area and to far away places.
Departures poses questions that arise if you have ever spent time at an airport without going anywhere. Where do travel agents go on holiday? What do you think about when you are on a moving walkway? Are all these people really going somewhere or just pretending to? What really happens in 'Kiddieland'? When will the penny finally drop? What will become of this building when no-one flys anymore? Left alone to answer these questions plan b have taken time to begin to develop theories: some are plausible and some are wild.
The special context of Leipzig/Halle airport has led plan b to also seek stories from the encapsulated village of Kursdorf, which you are taken round without leaving the building. Kursdorf itself is in a state of departure — a slow process of moving, letting go and starting again. Through increased connectivity — trains, planes and the motorway the village is reduced to an island. From the view point of the terminal building plan b try to imagine the future: a shattering of buildings left in Kursdorf and an airport also in flux.
Departures uses a specially recorded soundtrack to transport you on an imaginative journey and into unknown territories without the need of a passport.

Departures ist ein Video Walk speziell entwickelt, um Sie durch den Flughafen Leipzig/Halle zu führen. Es gibt fünf präparierte Gepäck Trolleys am Schalter der AusFlugHafenSicht Information auszuleihen. Ausgestattet mit Kopfhören können Sie nun eine Audiovisuelle Tour durch das Gebäude und hinaus in Welt machen ohne je das Gelände des Flughafens zu verlassen.
Vor Ihnen ist ein Haufen Koffer mit einem Bildschirm in dem obersten. Der Video, der Ihnen hier gezeigt wird ist gleichzeitig der Führer, der Ihnen zeigt, wo Sie sich im Terminal hinbegeben sollen und ein Fenster in andere Welten in der Umgebung des Flughafens und weiter entfernt.
Departure stellt Fragen, die erst aufkommen, wenn man lange Zeit auf einem Flughafen verbringt, ohne irgendwo hin zu fliegen. Wohin fahren Reisebüroangestellte in den Urlaub? Reisen diese Menschen wirklich irgendwo hin oder tun Sie bloß so als ob Sie wegfliegen würden? Was passiert wirklich in der Kinderspielecke >Kiddieland<? Wann wird der Cent hinabfallen? Wovon träumen Sicherheitsbeamte? Abgesehen von den Antworten auf diese Fragen haben sich plan b Zeit genommen, um ein paar Theorien zu entwickeln: einige sind plausibel andere etwas wild. Für den speziellen Kontext des Flughafen Leipzig/Halle hat plan b auch nach Geschichten des eingeschlossenen Dorfes Kursdorf untersucht.
Kursdorf selbst ist im Stadium des Abschieds (departure) - ein langsamer Prozess des Wegzugs, des Loslassens und des Neustarts. Durch die stetig wachsende Anbindung, Flugzeuge, Züge und Autobahn ist der Ort zu einer Insel reduziert worden. Aus der Perspektive des Terminals blickt plan b nun in eine Zukunft aus Abriss, verbleibenden Gebäuden und einem Flughafen im Wandel. Departures ist ein der Soundtrack, der Sie auf einer imaginären Reise in unbekannte Gebiete begleitet.
