Text Messages

Text message sewn as a sampler

Since about 2006, we have saved every sms text message we have sent each other. A major outcome of this data collection practice has been A Message to You, in which we read out a year's worth of text messages in a public space.

The sampler above is Sophia's response to making something lasting out of a medium we all have come to use everyday without much reflection.

Analysis

  • 'Wordles' created from our text messages

In 2011, as part of Daniel's residency with the Mixed Reality Lab (organised by Trampoline), he started to work with the English Department of Nottingham University on a separate project (Soul Walker) which entailed the analysis of our text messages to extract subconscious signs of mood which could be compared to the stated mood from the mood tracking practice.

The analysis of our text messages is something we hope to continue, either combining it with our GPS practice and geo-coding every text message we send or analysing them for recurrent words, vocabulary, differences in language as a function of how far apart we are from each other etc.
