Daisy, daisy, give me your answer do...
Because you'll look sweet upon a seat of a bicycle made for two!
We want to explore the physicality of bike riding such as the swerving bike dances that we performed at night in empty streets. It was this quiet and joyous choreography, which swung between falling, and the rush of pulling off a tricky stunt off balance which first inspired us to explore this territory.
Now we are trying to tackle a tandem and like the newcomers at the ballroom class we are not sure who is leading. Using the 130 km trip to Schloss Bröllin, where we had a residency to work on this project (28 June - 5 July 2004), as a starting point, we are examining what it is to be so hitched to another as we hurtle and struggle through the countryside.
Using video and sound collected from a variety of journeys we will re-create these outdoor activities for the confines of an indoor space using a low tech provisional hand-made aesthetic.
Explanations of how much power it takes to put on a show and how many people would have to be pedalling to generate that energy mix with the recounting of events on the journey and anecdotes from the history of the bicycle.
We would like to thank Podewil, Berlin and Schloss Bröllin for supporting research in association with this project to date
